چکیده

Superconducting CESR RF cavities were designed to handle high RF power delivered to the beam from klystron amplifiers (operating frequency 499.765 MHz). They are strongly overcoupled so that having high Q of the order of 10 they have couplers with external Qext of only 2×10. At a low beam current in the machine, almost full power is reflected from the cavity and goes to the load due to a ferrite circulator mounted between RF cavity and the klystron. With the beam current increasing, the power delivered to the beam goes up and the reflected power goes down. At a certain beam current the reflected power vanishes and the cavity turns perfectly matched to the waveguide power transmission line. If the beam current continues to rise the power reflection reappears and both delivered and reflected powers increase with the beam current.

Using Passive Cavities for Bunch Shortening in Cesr*

Passive (beam-driven) superconducting cavities can be used in storage rings for bunch shortening when necessary high RF voltage can be achieved only by using multiple cavities, but the beam power consumption does not justify using all of them in the active mode, powered by klystrons. An example is the ee collider CESR running with a beam energy below 2.5 GeV as a charm-tau factory (CESR-c) [1]....

A 12 Ghz 50mw Klystron for Support of Accelerator Research*

A 12 GHz 50MW X-band klystron is under development at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Klystron Department. The klystron will be fabricated to support programs currently underway at three European Labs; CERN, PSI, and INFN Trieste. The choice of frequency selection was due to the CLIC RF frequency changing from 30 GHz to the European X-band frequency of 11.99 GHz in 2008. Since the Klys...

Design, Operation, and Test Results of 350 Mhz Leda Rf System

The Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) being constructed at Los Alamos National Laboratory will serve as the prototype for the low energy section of Acceleration Production of Tritium (APT) accelerator. The APT accelerator requires over 244 RF systems each with a continuous wave output power of 1 MW. The reliability and availability of these RF systems is critical to the successful ope...

Superconducting Rf Control Issues at Cesr*

RF controls of the superconducting cavities have to deal with an extremely heavy beam loading in CESR. A feature of the CESR RF system operation is that superconducting cavities are under-coupled at high beam currents. This means that the RF system operates very close to Robinson stability limit. Analysis of the steadystate stability of the CESR RF system and the results of measurements with be...

Single Bunch Longitudinal Measurements of the Cornell Electron- Positron Storage Ring with the Superconducting RF Cavities

As part of the Phase III luminosity upgrade, the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring (CESR) RF system has been upgraded from normal conducting (NRF) to superconducting (SRF) cavaties. The new superconducting cavities change the overall impedance of CESR and thus change the longitudinal bunch distribution. Measurements of the single bunch longitudinal distribution have been made using a strea...
